Relist strategy: where to sell a car that didn't sell
Your auction ended without a sale, or the winner walked. Before you relist, three things decide where the car should go next: the after-auction window you still have, the fine print of the site where it was listed, and how often each site actually sells what it lists.
Most to least restrictive
Ranked by how far each site's own terms limit selling the car somewhere else:
- Most restrictive PCARMARKET, Collecting Cars, duPont Registry Live. Each says a car offered through it shouldn't be sold outside it. PCARMARKET and Collecting Cars charge a fee if it is, with no end date.
- Some restrictions Cars & Bids, The MB Market. Cars & Bids asks for 7 more days of exclusivity after close. The MB Market bars relisting a car that sold there and generally won't relist one itself.
- Least restrictive Bring a Trailer, Hagerty Marketplace. Exclusive only while the listing is up. No limits once the auction ends.
1. Use the window you still have
Several sites keep working on an unsold car for a short time after the auction, and some hold you to it. Collecting Cars can look for a buyer at your reserve for 24 hours, and if it finds one you've agreed to sell. Cars & Bids asks sellers to stay exclusive for 7 days while it tries a post-auction sale. PCARMARKET moves unsold cars to its Marketplace for an exclusive 48 hours to 4 weeks. Let those windows run out before you list anywhere else.
2. Read the fine print before you list anywhere else
Every site below requires exclusivity while your auction is live. Two go much further: PCARMARKET and Collecting Cars both say a car first offered through them must not be sold outside their site, with a fee if it is, and neither sets an end date.
| Site | Sell-through | After the auction | Fine print on selling elsewhere |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bring a Trailer Sell page ↗ | 81%2025, reported by Bring a Trailer | Bids aren't binding contracts between buyer and seller. BaT may pay part of the gap to your reserve, which you return if the car doesn't sell to the high bidder within 30 days. | Exclusive while the listing is up. No restriction after it ends. |
| Cars & Bids Sell page ↗ | 77%Dec 2025, tracked by Hypercars | Cars & Bids may take the car to the high bidder or other bidders for a post-auction sale. Both sides have to agree. | Exclusive until the auction closes. For 7 days after, Cars & Bids asks you to stay exclusive while it pursues a post-auction sale. 2ndBids reminds you of this window before you publish. |
| PCARMARKET Sell page ↗ | —Not published | Unsold cars go to the Marketplace for an exclusive 48 hours to 4 weeks. PCARMARKET brokers anonymous offers. | Its terms say any vehicle sourced through the platform must be sold through PCARMARKET. Any member involved in an off-platform sale of a listed car owes a fee equal to the auction fee, plus possible legal fees. No end date is stated. |
| The MB Market | —Not published | The MB Market contacts the high bidder to reach a price, with a lower 2.5% buyer's fee if it works. Only the high bidder can buy a car that missed reserve through the site. | Exclusive while the listing is up. A car that sells there may not be listed anywhere else. It generally won't relist a car. |
| duPont Registry Live Sell page ↗ | —Not published | duPont backs each car with its own guaranteed bid at the reserve, so cars shouldn't go unsold. | Sellers agree to list exclusively and not sell outside its platform. The full rules are in a consignment agreement that isn't public. |
| Collecting Cars Sell page ↗ | —Not published | The high bid stays open for you for 72 hours. Collecting Cars can find a buyer at your reserve for 24 hours, and you've agreed to sell to them. | Buyers and sellers may not complete a sale outside the site. If one happens, the seller owes 6% of the last agreed reserve (USD 1,000 minimum). No end date is stated. Its listing photos can't be used to sell the car elsewhere. |
| Hagerty Marketplace Sell page ↗ | 76%Dec 2025, tracked by Hypercars | Bids aren't binding. The seller and high bidder can agree a price below the reserve. | Exclusive only while the listing is live. No restriction after it ends. |
Sell-through is the share of finished auctions that sold. Company-reported figures cover a full year. Hypercars figures cover one month and can swing. Reserve auctions sell less often than no-reserve auctions on every site.
3. Pick the next step
- Close to your number? Lower your reserve or go no-reserve on the same site, if it will take the car back. You keep the audience that already watched it.
- Restricted by the fine print? Work inside that site's after-auction options, or ask the site in writing before you list anywhere else.
- Moving to a new site? Favor higher sell-through, and wait until the old auction and any offer period have fully ended.
- Want buyers who already wanted it? On 2ndBids, buyers post the exact cars they missed and what they'd pay. List it and they're matched to your car first. Your result and bid history still count.
4. Price from the high bid
Start from the high bid, not your old reserve. A floor a little above it, backed by the auction result and its comments, draws offers from people who were already watching. A second auction that ends lower than the first is a signal every buyer can see.
Common questions
Can I relist my car on another auction site after it didn't sell?
Often yes, once the auction and any after-auction window have ended. Bring a Trailer and Hagerty don't restrict it. PCARMARKET's terms say a car sourced through PCARMARKET must be sold through PCARMARKET, and Collecting Cars charges the seller a fee if a car is sold outside its site. Check the terms of the site where your car was listed first.
What is a good sell-through rate for a car auction site?
Bring a Trailer reported 81% for 2025. Hypercars tracked 77% for Cars & Bids and 76% for Hagerty Marketplace in December 2025. Rates for reserve auctions are lower than for no-reserve auctions.
